The Gilden Lehrman Institute of American History was founded in 1994 by Richard Gilder, a wealthy stock broker and former board member of the Manhattan Institute for Public Policy, and Lewis Lehrman, a former executive at Rite Aid, a former Republican candidate for the Governor of New York and a former trustee of the American Enterprise Institute, Heritage Foundation and Manhattan Institute for Public Policy. The Institute owns the Gilder Lehrman Collection, which is the largest private collection of its kind. It also administers the annual History Teacher of the Year award. In 2005, President George W. Bush awarded Gilder and Lehrman with the National Humanities Medal.
