Founded in 1987, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy is an economic think tank advocating free market solutions within the state of Michgan. The Mackinac Center is the country's largest conservative state-level policy institute. The group's website states "the Mackinac Center for Public Policy neither seeks nor accepts any government funding. It enjoys the support of foundations, individuals, and businesses who share a concern for Michigan's future and recognize the important role of sound ideas." As with most conservative economic policy organizations, the Mackinac Center opposes taxes, unions, and "big government" regulation. Regarding education policy, the Mackinac Center favors universal tuition tax credits (vouchers), privitization of many non-classroom services and strongly opposes the actions of the Michigan Educaiton Association, the state's teachers' union. The Mackinac Center's Morey Fiscal Policy Initiative aims to "limit taxation, champion broad-based, private sector economic development, and to reduce government outlays through state-spending cuts and privatization."
