Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace

Founded in 1919 by President Herbert Hoover, the Hoover Institution is one of the oldest and most renowned research institutes in the country. Long a bastion of the conservative and free market libertarian movements, Hoover provides much of the intellectual firepower for the neoconservative ideology and policies of President George W. Bush. Besides supporting the work of prominent conservative scholars, Hoover also publishes two journals, Hoover Digest and Policy Review. Almost entirely funded by conservative individuals and foundations, large corporate donors such as Exxon Mobile, and returns on its massive endowment, Hoover is seen by its critics as serving as a revolving door for conservative officials. Though the Institution is affiliated with Standard University, the relationship has been plagued by a tenuous relationship between students and faculty who have often protested the Institutions appointment of scholars and advocacy of conservative ideas. For example, soon after resigning from the post of Secretary of Defense, an embattled Donald Rumsfeld, architect of the failed Iraq War strategy was brought on at Hoover as a Distinguished Visiting Fellow.
