Foundation for Defense of Democracies

Founded in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 201, The Foundation for Defense of Democracies is "the only nonpartisan policy institute dedicated exclusively to promoting pluralism, defending democratic values, and fighting the ideologies that threaten democracy." Previously known as Emet, FDD is a neoconservative think tank funded by what the American Conservative termed "billionaire backers." The magazine reported that the group's "nearly $3 million annual budget comes from 27 major donors... a semi-formal organization of major Jewish philanthropists who meet twice a year to discuss joint projects." FDD's Leadership Council of Distinguished Advisors incudes former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former National Security Advisor Robert Bud McFarlane and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT). Rather than merely targeting the policy elite, FDD focuses its efforts "in the media, on college campuses, in the courthouse, and in the policy community."
