The Federalist Society is a group of conservatives and libertarians interested in the current state of the legal order. According to the organizations website, it has over 40,000 members, consisting mainly of lawyers, law students, and scholars. Founded in 1982, the Federalist Society believes that [l]aw schools and the legal profession are currently strongly dominated by a form of orthodox liberal ideology which advocates a centralized and uniform society.
The Federalist Societys founding members include Edwin Meese III and Judge Robert Bork. Its high-profile members include former Attorney General John Ashcroft, former White House Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr, Bush administration lawyer Jay Bybee, and Supreme Court justices John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, and Samuel Alito. It is funded by a number of major conservative groups, including the Bradley, Olin, Scaife, and Koch Foundations.
