Committee on the Present Danger

Founded to combat the Soviets Union in the 1950's, the Committee on the Present Danger (CPD) was resurrected in 2004 in order "to stiffen American resolve to confront the challenge presented by terrorism and the ideologies that drive it." The CPD writes speeches, books and testimonies to promote a seemingly hawkish agenda, aimed at combating radical Islam, what co-chair former CIA director James Woosley calls a "totalitarian movement masquerading as a religion." Right Web characterizes CPD leadership as "erstwhile Cold Warriors and leading figures of the neoconservative political faction and the pro-Israel Right." Members and leadership include Center for Security Policy founder Frank Gaffney Jr., Freedom for the Defense of Democracies president Clifford May, Senator Joseph Lieberman as well as board members and fellows from other right-wing outfits such as the American Enterprise Institute, the Hudson Institute, and the Heritage Foundation. CPD has received funding from right-wing grant making foundations such as the Carthage and the Sarah Scaife foundations.
