Founded in 1985, the Center for Immigration Studies is "the nation's only" immigration-only think tank supporting fewer immigrants but a warmer welcome for those admitted." CIS is a passionate proponent of ensuring immigrants, especially those who are Spanish-speaking, assimilate into American society and culture. However, the group believes this "is increasingly unlikely when the schools and the culture at large are skeptical, even hostile, to patriotism." In order to link immigration with the threat of terrorism, CIS holds that "two-thirds of terrorists caught in the United States have engaged in some form of immigration fraud." CIS states that the attacks on September 11, 2001 "exposed long-standing holes in our immigration system." In 2004, CIS presented an award to CNN's Lou Dobbs for his "informed and fair reporting on this contentious and complicated issue."
