Americans for Tax Reform

501(c)(4) nonprofit
Employer Identification Number: 52-1403587
Founded in 1985, Americans for Tax Reform is an organization that promotes lower taxes. According to its website, Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) opposes all tax increases as a matter of principle. We believe in a system in which taxes are simpler, flatter, more visible, and lower than they are today. The government's power to control one's life derives from its power to tax. We believe that power should be minimized. ATR was founded, and is currently led, by Grover G. Norquist. Since the 1990s, ATR has promoted its Taxpayer Protection Pledge, a written promise by legislators and candidates for office that commits them to oppose any effort to increase income taxes on individuals and businesses. ATR also opposes labor unions. In 2009, ATR created on online video game called Card Checked that portrayed union representatives as violent thugs.
The group is affiliated with American for Tax Reform Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
