Based in Tupelo, Mississippi, the American Family Association (AFA) spreads conservative Christian beliefs through its network of online supporters, radio listeners, and journal readers. It staunchly opposes gay rights while also campaigning against abortion rights, pornography and "indecency" in the media. Founded in 1977 by Donald E. Wildmon, an evangelical pastor, the AFA now controls nearly 200 radio stations across the country and has a major web presence, attracting over 40 million hits a month, according to its site. AFA purports to promote a biblical message, stating that its goal is to "be a champion of Christian activism." However, while claiming to be tolerant of homosexuals, much of its content is blatantly homophobic. One headline reads "Gay sex = domestic terrorism" and its stated aim is to stop "the radical homosexual agenda" it claims pervades the media. The AFA has also called for the arrest of an openly-gay Congressman on the grounds that he was violating state sodomy law and campaigned for Proposition 8 in California. In addition to its homophobia, the AFA also supports other radical causes. It uses its Internet presence to support the TEA Party movement, and defended recently defended Mike Huckabee's 1992 statements calling for a quarantine of AIDS patients.
