According to its website, the American Council on Science and Health main priority “is to help Americans distinguish between real and hypothetical health risks.” It employs over 300 physicians and scientists in order to play down certain health concerns. While ACSH claims to be quoted frequently by politicians and media outlets, it has been criticized at times for being quite veiled in its promotion of information. Sourcewatch notes that while ACSH has published anti-tobacco articles, the Council is apologetic for the products of its supporters (Coca-Cola, General Mills, etc.). The ACSH ceased to provide the public with a list of its supporters, the most recent list Sourcewatch gives is from 1984. Elizabeth Wheelan, the Council’s founder, does proudly proclaim that the right-wing foundations Sarah Scaife and JM Olin helped get the ACSH off the ground. In addition, ACSH has full support from the President of the Heritage Foundation and has scientific advisers from the Hudson Institute and the American Enterprise Institute.
