Employer Identification Number: 52-0810813
Founded in 1964 as a response to Barry Goldwater devastating loss in the 1964 presidential election, the group was founded by a small group of conservative leaders, including John Ashbrook, Robert E. Bauman, L. Brent Bozell, William F. Buckley Jr., Jameson Campaigne Sr., John Chamberlain, Katharine St. George and Frank S. Meyer. The group counts its accomplishments as fighting to keep OSHA off the backs of small businesses; opposing the Panama Canal giveaway; challenging the SALT treaties; supporting aid to freedom fighters in communist countries; promoting the confirmation of conservative justices to the Supreme Court; advocating near-term deployment of strategic defenses; and battling against higher taxes and wasteful government spending. In 1993, ACU played a prominent role in fighting President Bill Clintons healthcare reform by creating the group Citizens against Rationing Health.
