Founded in 1998, the American Civil Rights Union is the conservative counterpart to the ACLU. According to its website, the organizations mission is to protect the civil rights of all Americans and to stand against harmful anti-Constitutional ideologies that have taken hold in our nation's courts, law schools, and bureaucracies. Its top issues include opposing the Fairness Doctrine, protecting state sovereignty, and supporting FISA amendments giving the president broad authority to engage in surveillance. In recent years, the American Civil Rights Union has filed legal briefs in many prominent court cases. It defended the Boy Scouts right to discriminate against homosexuals in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, opposed handgun restrictions in Heller v. DC and NRA v. City of Chicago, and sided with the New Haven firefighters in Ricci v. Destefano.
