According to the Americas Health Insurance Plans' website, AHIP "is the national association representing nearly 1,300 member companies providing health insurance coverage." Among its most well-known member companies are Aetna, CIGNA, UnitedHealth, WellPoint and 25 separate BlueCross BlueShields. The organization vows to represent the "industrys interests before Congress, and with federal administrative and regulatory bodies." Based in Washington, D.C., AHIP is most visible in the debate surrounding health care reform. Outspoken in its opposition to a public option, AHIP has attempted to frame itself as "pro-reform" by sponsoring a series of advertisements supporting "bipartisan reforms."
