Republicans Collectively Freak Out About The Ghailani Verdict
In the wake of a civilian court verdict convicting suspected terrorist Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani of only one of the over 280 charges brought against him, Republicans had a field day decrying the Obama administration's decision to try suspected terrorists before civilian courts instead of military tribunals. The denunciations ranged anywhere from declaring such a decision "insanity" to suggesting that the Obama administration "nearly allowed this terrorist to get away." In reality, there is no evidence that trying Ghailani in a military court would have produced a more severe verdict. Indeed, whereas terrorists tried in military commissions have served relatively short prison sentences, those tried in criminal courts have faced significantly longer prison terms.

Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - July 11, 2010
The Sunday shows were quiet yesterday save for Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), who offered a weak and inaccurate defense of Arizona's notorious new immigration law. The Arizona Republican insisted to CNN's Candy Crowley that Arizona's immigration enforcement law does not allow racial profiling and mirrors federal law. The truth is that SB 1070 hinges on a police officer's "reasonable suspicion" that someone is in the country illegally, and supporters of the law have argued that dress and grooming can identify "illegals." Most damning of all, emails show the law's coauthor was eager to give Arizona cops the authority to demand papers from people who violate city ordinances by having "cars on blocks in the yard." And Franks' claim that Arizona's law does not go beyond existing law was shown to be false long ago.

GOP Reps Falsely Claim Clean Energy Legislation Would Harm Economy, Kill Jobs
On January 21, 2010, Reps. Lamar Smith (R-TX), Sam Graves (R-MO), Trent Franks (R-AZ), and Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) wrote a letter to Cass Sunstein, the White House administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. In the letter, the congressmen falsely claimed clean energy policies would kill jobs and harm the economy. In reality, increasing our investment in clean energy technology would create 1.9 million American jobs and boost household income by nearly $1,200 per year!

Republican Lawmakers Leading Witch Hunt Against Muslim Group
The Council of American-Islamic Relations has recently come under attack from four Congressional Republicans who accuse the group of attempting to plant spies in key Congressional offices in order to affect policy. Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC), Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ), Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), and Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) held a press conference yesterday accusing the Muslim advocacy group of "trying to infiltrate the offices of members of Congress by placing interns in the offices." The accusations against CAIR are in large part frivolous and are based on a new book written by authors known for their history of deception and bigotry.

Rep. Franks Falsely Claimed Health Insurance Reform Will Expand Abortion
On Sunday August 9, 2009, Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) stated that the passage of a Democratic insurance reform bill would be the "largest expansion of abortion in the United States since Roe v. Wade." Unfortunately for Rep. Franks, many independent organizations have explicitly proven otherwise.
