Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - July 24, 2011
This week's Sunday shows were largely about the struggle to reach an agreement to raise the debt ceiling. On Fox News Sunday, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) blamed Obama's policies for "out of control" spending without noting that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the recession, and the Bush tax cuts are the primary drivers of debt and deficits. He also touted the deeply problematic balanced budget amendment. On CNN, Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) claimed that the House-passed GOP budget eliminated all corporate loopholes when it really secures tax breaks for big oil, all while necessitating a middle-class tax hike. Price also minimized the very serious effects of the checks that won't get paid out if the debt limit isn't raised by August 2nd. Later, Tim Pawlenty falsely claimed that President Obama is responsible for tripling deficits within his term. On Face the Nation, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) wrongly said that spending alone is the problem driving deficits. Finally, on Meet the Press, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) justified the GOP's efforts to obstruct debt ceiling negotiations by distorting credit rating agencies' warnings, and then blamed Democrats for the GOP-driven politicization of a Federal Aviation Administration funding bill.

Rep. Price Cites "Little Trust" Of IPAB — Which Is More Trusted Than Congress Or Private Insurance Companies
In yesterday's House Budget Committee hearing on the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB), Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) started his questioning of HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius by citing "little trust" among the public for the federal government. However, recent polling shows that the public would trust "an independent panel of full-time experts appointed by the president" — like IPAB — far more than Congress to make decisions about reducing Medicare spending. In fact, the poll also shows that the public trusts Congress about the same as it trusts profit-seeking private insurance companies. That's not too good for Rep. Price.

Rep. Price Continues To Mislead The Public On Spending And Taxation
Yesterday, Fox Business hosted Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) to discuss the current situation over the debt ceiling. Rep. Price blamed the nation's ails on the growth in government spending, claiming that taxing "too little" has not been a major driver of our current deficit projections and that the only way to balance the budget is by decreasing spending — without any revenue increases. As a solution for the future, Rep. Price advocated for a problematic balanced budget amendment, which would actually make it harder to balance the budget and could be unenforceable. Finally, Rep. Price regurgitated a popular Republican talking point — that the Obama administration promised unemployment would not go over 8 percent — even though that's a serious misrepresentation of the truth.

Rep. Price: $1.5 Trillion Deficit Estimate Due To "Democrats' Gross Mismanagement"
The Congressional Budget Office released today a Budget and Economic Outlook report for 2011 through 2021, and many Republicans as well as Democrats have responded appropriately to its conclusion that we can expect a $1.5 trillion budget deficit for 2011. Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), on the other hand, went ahead and ignored the substance of the report to attribute the expected deficit to "the pursuit of a big government agenda" and "the gross mismanagement of our nation's finances." Yet the CBO report itself explained that expected deficits are largely the result of the recession.

Rep. Price Lies, Says Economic Policies Have Failed
Upon hearing news that the U.S. economy grew for the third straight quarter, Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) lambasted the "failure" of the "liberal economic experiment." Despite his ill-timed release, Price has his facts wrong. The economy is on the road to recovery. In March 2010, the economy added 162,000 jobs, the largest job gain in three years, and through the end of 2009, the Recovery Act had created up to 2.4 million jobs.

Rep. Price Cites Bogus "New England Journal of Medicine" Study
During an interview with CNN's Rick Sanchez, Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) claimed that the New England Journal of Medicine "came out with a study" showing that one-third of the nation's doctors would leave medicine because of health care reform. In reality, the unscientific poll was conducted by The Medicus Firm and the New England Journal of Medicine denied any association with its findings.

Rep. Price Gets It Wrong On The Recovery Act
On December 21, 2009, Rep. Tom Price, chairman of the House Republican Study Committee, wrote an op-ed in the Washington Examiner in which he lobbed false criticisms at the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In reality, the Recovery Act created up to 1.6 million jobs and kept 6 million Americans out of poverty, including 244,000 in Price's home state of Georgia.
