Rep. Tiahrt: In Bed With Banks
On May 13, 2009, Rep. Todd Tiahrt introduced the Bailout Freedom Act. He claimed the act would allow "financial institutions to more quickly exit bailout entrapments and pay back funds borrowed from American taxpayers." In reality, allowing banks to pay back TARP funds quickly will benefit banks, not taxpayers, by allowing them to once again reward executives with huge bonuses, and eliminating the interest they are currently paying on the government loans. Rep. Tiahrt's interest in helping out banks may stem from his deep-seated ties to the industry - and the hundreds of thousands of dollars banks have donated to his campaign.
