FLASHBACK: Anti-Muslim Hardliner Rep. Peter King's Past Support For The IRA

Incoming Homeland Security Chairman Rep. Peter King (R-NY) is widely known for his anti-Muslim views. In the years since 9/11, King has striven to link the American Muslim community to extremism, stating that up to 85 percent of mosques are run by extremist leaders and accusing leaders in "mainstream Islam" of being uncooperative with anti-terror efforts. Most recently, King has pledged to hold hearings on the "radicalization of the American Muslim community," sanctimoniously suggesting that he'll do so "on behalf of Muslims." Yet King's previously strident support for the Irish Republican Army — the terrorist group responsible for countless bombings and murders during the decades of violent conflict in Northern Ireland — makes it clear that not all terrorists are equal in King's eyes. Not only did King fundraise for IRA-linked groups, but he also publicly touted the IRA as "the legitimate voice of occupied Ireland" and pledged support for the "brave men and women" of the IRA who were "carrying forth the struggle against British imperialism." Although King denounced the IRA after 9/11, he continued to express sympathy for the group and its members.

Republicans Collectively Freak Out About The Ghailani Verdict

In the wake of a civilian court verdict convicting suspected terrorist Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani of only one of the over 280 charges brought against him, Republicans had a field day decrying the Obama administration's decision to try suspected terrorists before civilian courts instead of military tribunals. The denunciations ranged anywhere from declaring such a decision "insanity" to suggesting that the Obama administration "nearly allowed this terrorist to get away." In reality, there is no evidence that trying Ghailani in a military court would have produced a more severe verdict. Indeed, whereas terrorists tried in military commissions have served relatively short prison sentences, those tried in criminal courts have faced significantly longer prison terms.

Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - August 15, 2010

As expected, several Republicans used their appearances on the Sunday shows as an opportunity to demagogue over the controversy involving a proposed Islamic community center and mosque in Lower Manhattan, two blocks from Ground Zero.  Sen. John Cornyn falsely claimed that the project would be built on the site of Ground Zero, Rep. Peter King attacked the motives of the man heading the project and Rep. Kevin McCarthy, oblivious to the growing anti-Muslim sentiment within the conservative movement, claimed that the backlash against the project had to do with the sensitivities over Ground Zero and claimed that Americans would support such efforts if it were built elsewhere.

Tortured Logic: Rep. Peter King Will Shut Down Congress Over Torture Investigations

On April 23, 2009, Politico reported the completely unsurprising fact that Rep. Peter King -- who recently made the nonsensical suggestion that the DHS should be "talking about look out for mosques" -- doesn't want any investigation into Bush era officials responsible for torture. In fact, Rep. King threatened to shut down Congress if any charges are filed, saying, "[w]e would need to have a scorched earth policy and use procedural means to bring the place to a halt - go to war." But Rep. King's defense of torture ignores reality: torture doesn't work and it puts more American lives at risk.
