Grace-Marie Turner Distorts Data About Health Care Law's Impact On Job Creation
Last week, Grace-Marie Turner, founder and president of the conservative Galen Institute, penned an op-ed in which she claimed that repealing the health care law would create jobs. She backs this claim up by twisting statistics from anti-health care reform groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Heritage Foundation and the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) to fit her goal of proving that the law is discouraging hiring and increasing job losses. But the fact remains that despite the often repeated claim that "the health law is killing jobs," health care employment has grown over the past year and repealing the law would actually reduce employment.

Heritage Foundation Clings To Myths To Defend Bush Tax Cuts
On the Heritage Foundation's Foundry blog, Mike Gonzalez, Heritage's resident Bush hagiographer, wrote a highly misleading post defending lower tax rates for the very wealthy. It's almost impossible to defend President George W. Bush's economic policies without being at least somewhat dishonest, which Gonzalez accomplishes by claiming that the fantastical idea that tax cuts "pay for themselves" is actually a straw man set up by mischievous liberals. According to Gonzalez, the Bush Administration actually "went out of their way" to make it clear that their tax cut packages were not expected to pay for themselves. The fact, however, is that time and time again, President George W. Bush and others in his administration asserted that cutting taxes increases revenue, and the Heritage Foundation itself has spread that dishonest claim. He went on to suggest that cutting taxes also spurs growth, and that the Bush tax cuts themselves helped create millions of jobs. Both claims are undermined by data on jobs and the economy that indicate Bush's tenure to be a disaster for both economic growth and employment.

Sen. Alexander's Deeply Dishonest Filibuster Reform Speech
At a Heritage Foundation event yesterday, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) gave a speech decrying Democratic attempts to change the filibuster rules. The speech was shot through with falsehoods, such as the claim that Democrats are trying to eliminate minority rights in the Senate because they lost an election. In fact, the reform proposals preserve the filibuster, but require obstructionists to actually hold the floor continuously to prevent a bill's consideration. Similarly, Alexander claimed that Democrats have invented the simple majority vote for rules changes out of thin air, but the practice is based in the Constitution and was used as early as 1917 — and Republicans argued for the procedure in 2005. Later, Alexander disingenuously quoted the late Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV). Byrd condemned GOP filibusters, but Alexander simply skipped that part of Byrd's speech. Most egregious among Alexander's falsehoods, he claimed that Democrats are "the real party of no," despite the fact that filibusters have doubled since Republicans lost control of the Senate.
