Hyping New Book, CEI's Chris Horner Routinely Uses "Facts" Debunked 7 Months Ago
Promoting a new book, the Competitive Enterprise Institute's Chris Horner has written a series of blog posts on conservative websites. Each one cites a cap-and-trade cost estimate snatched from a Freedom of Information Act request. The documents recovered analyzed a policy not included in any clean energy bill proposed in Congress, rendering them meaningless. In fact, CEI's claims were widely debunked in September 2009.

Competitive Enterprise Institute Lies, Claims Wall Street Reform Would Be "Permanent Bailout"
On April 16, 2010, the Competitive Enterprise Institute repeated the Frank Luntz-inspired lies that Wall Street reform would create a "permanent bailout fund" and reward creditors of the failed firms. In reality, the bill does NOT reward or bailout firms, but safely dismantles "any failed financial company" that threatens the stability of the entire economy. The costs of dissolving these companies are paid NOT by taxpayers, but by fees levied on financial companies. Additionally, the bill specifically states a failed firm's creditors shall "bear losses."

Exxon Mobil-Funded Denier Groups Push Email Hacker Scandal
Over the past decade, oil giant Exxon Mobil has paid millions to organizations and "think tanks" in an attempt to deceive the public about the science behind global climate change. It's no surprise that those very same organizations are now doing everything in their power to please their benefactor by drawing attention to the so-called "Climategate" scandal involving hacked emails from the University of East Anglia in England.

Republicans Brazenly Misrepresent Cap-And-Trade Cost Numbers
On September 16, 2009, Republicans opposed to clean energy legislation circulated a blog post flaunting a Freedom of Information Act request by the conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute. The documents include a cost-estimate of an out-dated, abandoned cap-and-trade plan that immediately auctioned 100% of carbon allowances. The American Clean Energy and Security Act does not do this. In order to contain costs, the bill initially awards allowances for free, rendering CEI's revelation meaningless.

Competitive Enterprise Institute Exaggerated The Cost Of Cap-And-Trade
On September 1, 2009, the Competitive Enterprise Institute falsely stated cap-and-trade would cost "about $248 more a month," or about $3,000 per year. In reality, the American Clean Energy and Security Act would create 1.7 million American jobs, reduce harmful emissions and help America become more energy independent, all for less than a quarter a day.

Oil Companies Bankroll "Experts" In New Anti-Regulation Infomercial
As the debate over cap-and-trade heats up in the Senate, the Competitive Enterprise Institute has released what it calls a "documentary" on climate change. The video, Policy Peril: Why Global Warming Policies Are More Dangerous Than Global Warming Itself, is an attempt to downplay the risks associated with global warming. CEI fails to note, however, that a host of "experts" interviewed in the video are employed by organizations that have accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from America's largest oil companies.
