Chaos In Boston

April 19, 2013 3:57 pm ET
Boston is under lockdown as law enforcement officials continue searching for the second suspected perpetrator of the Boston Marathon bombings. The suspects have been identified as two young men of alleged Chechen background. With the American people following the chaos in Boston and leaders in Washington discussing the potential impact on immigration reform, here are some appropriate remarks heading into the weekend.

TALKING POINTS

  • This is a time for Americans to come together as a nation and stand with the people of Boston. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
  • We stand behind our law enforcement officials who are working to bring the perpetrators to justice. We do not have all the facts.
  • The situation on the ground in Boston is very fluid and rapidly moving. Again, no one has all the facts. It is premature to jump to any final conclusions about the attackers. So far, two young men, described as not fitting in and as "losers" by their uncle, have been identified as suspects.
  • Once this incident is resolved, law enforcement and national security experts will review all security procedures to advise if changes should be made. We should listen and carefully evaluate them.
  • Experts also advise that  indiscriminate public attacks are designed to divide our community and pit us against each other. We are stronger and safer in the face of security threats against our country when we stick together.
  • Standing by our values and institutions is a fundamental American strength. It is a time to come together as a nation and stand with the people of Boston, not to single out entire groups of law-abiding Americans just because of where they came from or how they pray.
  • Our job as Americans now is to remain united, track down those responsible, and bring them to justice.

QUESTION AND RESPONSE ON IMMIGRATION REFORM

QUESTION: "What do these events mean for immigration reform in Congress?"
RESPONSE:

  • It is very premature to jump to any final conclusions about the attackers and their motives. No one has all the facts and the situation on the ground in Boston is very fluid and rapidly moving.
  • What is clear is that some on the far right are trying to use the events unfolding in Boston to score political points against immigration reform -- before the facts are known and understood.
  • Those exploiting today's chaos to undermine immigration reform were opponents of reform long before this week.
  • If there are lessons to be learned here and changes that policy experts recommend as a result, of course we should listen and carefully evaluate them.
  • But our job as Americans right now is to remain united with the people of Boston, track down those responsible, and bring them to justice.
