DREAM Decision

June 15, 2012 1:58 pm ET
In a bold and historic decision, the President announced today that his Administration will use its legal authority to allow DREAMers -- young New Americans who were brought into the country as kids -- to apply to stay in the only home they've ever known without fear of deportation.

CORE MESSAGE

Young people who love America and contribute to America strengthen America.

Connect: It's not right to punish children who've done nothing wrong because you don't like what their parents did.

Define: The President's common sense decision means that young people who grew up in America can keep contributing to the only home they've ever known.

Speak to values: It's not just about where you were born that makes you American. It's about how you live your life and what you do in the only country you've always loved and called home, too.

Contrast: Some politicians would rather punish these kids who did nothing wrong and everything right -- doing well in school and giving back to the community -- just because they don't like what their parents did.

Bottom line: America is strengthened by holding onto young people who love our country and are contributing to it. How we treat aspiring citizens reflects our commitment to the values that define us as Americans.

Words to use: New Americans, New American immigrants, Aspiring citizens
Words to avoid: Undocumented, Illegal aliens
