Response

Hey,

Thanks for forwarding that email.  I appreciate that you're tuned in to President Obama's plans for health care reform - everyone should be.  I have to say, though, that a lot of the stuff in this email just isn't true.

First, the president never said he had a "biblical mandate." He did say that we have a "moral obligation" to make sure all Americans have health care, but I don't really see the problem with that.  Nobody should die just because they don't have as much money as somebody else and families shouldn't have to go broke just to care for somebody who gets really sick.

Obama did say that some of his opponents have been "bearing false witness."  However, that's not even close to the same thing as saying "anyone who resists his lock-step liberalism is a liar!" The fact is that a LOT of politicians and other people in the media have been LYING about what health care reform will do.

For example, lots of people have said that the plan in Congress would cover illegal immigrants.  That's a lie -- there's a specific section in the bill saying it won't.  This independent website PoltiFact.com, which corrects Democrats and Republicans, gave that claim a "Pants On Fire" rating.  Talk about bearing false witness!  http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/jul/30/chain-email/no-free-health-care-illegal-immigrants-health-bill/

It's the same thing with the "death panel" stuff that Sarah Palin was saying.  Even the email you forwarded said there's "mandatory so-called 'end of life' counseling," but that's not true at all.  PolitiFact.com gave that a "Pants On Fire" rating also.  The counseling would help seniors plan things like advance directives in case they get sick and living wills.  It would also be purely OPTIONAL.  Read more about it here: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/jul/23/betsy-mccaughey/mccaughey-claims-end-life-counseling-will-be-requi/

Also, health care reform won't require you to pay for anyone's abortion.  In fact, the House already passed an amendment to the bill making sure of it.  You can check that out here: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/aug/07/john-boehner/boehner-says-democrats-health-care-plan-would-lead/

And one last thing: the email talks about what would happen if a "freedom-loving American" ever claimed God was on his side... well, don't forget that George W. Bush actually said that the Iraq War was a mission from God! http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2005/oct/07/iraq.usa

I fully encourage you to contact your representative and let them know what you think.  But you should get the facts straight before you do.  I know it's tough with all the bad information out there to figure out what's true.  Still, I think it should be clear that the claims in this email are NOT the truth.

Talk to you soon.
