BlueCross BlueShield Opposes Reforms That Would Cut Into Their Monopoly
In an attempt to drum up opposition to Democratic proposals for health care reform, one of the country's biggest private insurers has sent a mailer (with prepaid return postage!) to incite its policyholders to fight against reform.
As reported by Talking Points Memo, health insurance giant BlueCross BlueShield is apparently under the impression that the current health care system in the United States is not in need of drastic reform in order to better serve the American people. "We already have a system that covers 160 million Americans. Let's build on that," the mailer states.
Build on what? Millions of Americans can't access adequate treatment because they've been denied coverage, have been dropped from their policy after years of dutiful payment, or because the cost is too great.
To everyone who doesn't stand to make a profit from the current, broken system, it is clear we need transformative reform to bring competition to these private companies that continue to hysterically cry about the need for the free-market to govern health care all the while trying to prevent competition from gaining any ground in the monopolies they hold.
Based on prior and current performance, the private insurance industry cannot be trusted to reform itself. Considering their current advantage - why would they give it up?
